Most websites specify the background colour and the font. I don't know why. It is your browser, you presumably have it set with colours that soothe your eyes and fonts that look clear on your screen, so who am I to change it.
Well, maybe I do know why. When I first looked at my pages, with Netscape Navigator, they were in a fussy, serifed font, which lacked contrast due to the grey background. They did not look good.
If this is how they look to you, it is because you haven't set your preferences. They are tucked away at the bottom of edit menu. The font changes take effect immediately, making it easy to try different ones. The colour change waits until you leave the preferences menu. I recommend white.
